DACOR BPL
Connection Setup
Windows
XP
Right Click on your wireless connection icon in the system
tray in the lower right hand corner of the Windows XP desktop and open “View
Available Wireless Connections” to get the following screen…
You may see several Available connections that your wireless
card could associate with some of these may be wireless access points installed
in the house or apartment next door, but are not the BPL access points that
will get you on line.
Look for entries under “Available Wireless Networks” and
choose one of the available DACOR wireless connections. Usually
the top listing will be the strongest at a given location but may change as you
move your computer to another location.
Once you have chosen one of the BPL access points you must
check the box: “Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network even
though it is not secure”.
Do not be concerned about this warning because DACOR
secures your connection using PPPoE and not WEP.
In fact, your PPPoE connection is much more secure that WEP and actually creates a
secure “tunnel” into DACOR’s network which is more difficult to “hack” than
WEP.
After checking the “Allow…” box the “Connect” button should
no longer be grayed-out allowing you to click on Connect to associate your
wireless card with DACOR’s BPL network.
Now that you have established the wireless connection you
must set up a PPPoE connection profile as follows…
Click Start, then Settings, then Network Connections, then
New Connection Wizard
which launches the following Wizard Window…

Click Next…

Choose Connect to the Internet and click Next…

Choose Set up my connection manually and click Next…

Choose Connect using a broadband connection that requires a
user name and password (aka a PPPoE connection) then click Next…
Give your connection a name like “DACOR BPL” and click Next…

Enter the username and password you selected when you setup
your account with DACOR.
You may choose to enable the other options by checking those boxes, but none of them
are required for BPL testing.
Click Next when ready…

Check the box if you would like an Icon on your desktop for
connecting to the BPL Pilot system.
Click Finished to close the Wizard and ether click on the new icon on your desktop
or open the Connections window through the Start-Setting window to lauch the
following screen…

Click Connect after entering your user name and password or
just click Connect if you told the Wizard to remember this information.
This action will place a second connection icon in the
system tray in the lower right corner of the desktop. This second icon is for your PPPoE session and behaves very much like a dialup
session in that you need to “disconnect” the session to log off the PPPoE
server.
If for some reason you loose your wireless connection to the
BPL network (you move away from the access point), the PPPoE session will
disconnect itself in a manner similar to a dialup connection where you pull the
modems phone cord out of the wall phone jack. It
is important to note that when this occurs, the PPPoE server may not recognize
your disconnect immediately and prevent you from establishing a “second
session” right away.
You should wait at least 5 minutes for the server to reset itself. If
it fails to do this, it will be necessary to contact DACOR to force the reset.
This is a known problem in the PPPoE server software that we hope to have resolved
soon.
